Tips for Communicating with Divorce Lawyers
Going through a divorce is a stressful time for anybody and it brings with it a lot of uncertainty — uncertainty about what life will be like after the separation, uncertainty about how the process works, and uncertainty about what the best way is to communicate with your lawyers. The truth is that we, at Riëtte Oosthuizen Attorneys, cannot tell you exactly what life will be like after your separation but we can give you a few tips on how to communicate with your lawyers to make the process run smoother.
Be Honest with Your Divorce Lawyers
Getting a divorce is not cheap and you do not want to waste time when communicating with lawyers. You want to reduce the number of times you need to communicate back and forth. Lying to your lawyers is one of the surest ways to drag out a separation process and add money to your bill. This will just lead to your former partner needing to dispute the untruthful claims first before you can reach an agreement and sign the papers. If you are the defendant and claims are being made against you, be honest with your lawyers about whether they are true or not. If you are honest and clear from the beginning, you can expedite the divorce process.
Be Clear About What You Want from The Start
Being clear about what you want in the divorce from the start helps a lot. If there are any shared assets you want, if you want custody of certain pets, and if you want your child-custody agreement to be set up in a certain way, communicate it clearly from the beginning. You will add a lot of extra paperwork and time if you only reveal that you want certain things a few weeks or months into the divorce process.
Listen to Their Advice
If you have never gone through the divorce before, you might have a lot of questions and be confused about how the process works, its legalities, what you are allowed to do in terms of your child custody agreements, etc. You might think that you, as a parent, can withhold the child/children from the other parent because you personally do not think it is a good idea for the other parent to see them but a divorce lawyer will be able to give you the best advice about what is the best – and legal – thing to do.
Whenever you feel uncertain, speak to your lawyer first and listen to the advice they give you. Listening to lawyers can save you time and a lot of trouble in the future. Every step, every decision, and every word that is said in the divorce proceedings is important. You do not want to say or do anything that you might regret in the future and if you listen to your lawyers, you can save yourself a lot of regrets.
